kathakali, a classical dance from Kerala is one of India’s most exquisite forms of classical performance and art of dance, originating from the southwestern state of Kerala. It derives its name from “Katha” meaning story or conversation and “Kala” representing art and performance, fused to denote the dance form that involves the artful portrayal of tales. Usually, these tales are centred around traditional themes including folk and religious stories from Hindu mythology and often depict stories from the epics and Puranas. Kathakali performances combine an elaborate live orchestra with rich music, performers in Kathakali dance costumes who are intricately dressed with vividly painted faces, and distinct choreography that combines facial and hand gestures combined with movements from ancient martial arts, and in all create an unforgettable experience for the audience.
